Late to this but I think your premise (it’s an American form) is broadly right. The worthy exceptions I can think of are either shorter (Levy’s The Position of Spoons) or in a slightly different genre (nature writing - e.g., MacDonald’s Vesper Flights or Rundell’s Golden Mole). All worth a read.
