If you want more detailed information, there are two letters to Barthes’s mother about his death in Roland Barthes’s Album (Columbia University Press). The first is from the Commander of the Second Patrol Squadron; the second is from Captain Exelmans.

He was killed in naval action in the North Sea on October 27 on a patrol boat called La Montaigne.
