On the Nintendo side of things, all cartridges pointed to a domain in their control, and the games were P2P so Nintendo could've easily moved in-house. Wiimmfi only uses 1% of its power on one machine, thousands of ghost leaderboards also ran on an old Cambridge University desktop at MrBean's house

Also worth mentioning that even after selling the GameSpy infrastructure and that, IGN still continued to operate the GameSpy website as a seperate entity. They ceased updating it in 2013, but I think the page is still up

Correction: GameSpy was not owned by IGN at the time of shutdown. They sold it to Glu in 2012, who then nuked it
Technically, Nintendo is still at fault, since the cartridge code points to nintendowifi.net, which simply relayed to Gamespy.net servers running simple P2P code the devs written already
