I would be careful with quoting Thomas Mann, who was a fanatic German nationalist and had welcomed the first World War as a "cleansing" and liberating moment from a perceived liberal decadence. What he means by "evil" might be quite different from what we think today.

The Right (not just in the US) has created a simulacrum of politics and the economy that has lost all tangible relation to reality. Data, facts, and reality have no authority over their perception anymore, it is all about reproducing their own construct of reality.
