Lmao okay I take it back this essay is the sort of thing I’d write (ie, something sloppy and ill-advised). How do you end up describing what appears to be your first ever exposure to Pynchon-type hysterical realism, in the middle of your review of *American literary trends and their politics*??
Leave aside that no one-least of all a harried dad seeking to defuse a tense standoff among small children-thinks of themselves as an "archaic medium" undoing the tacit social contract by which language subdues the threat of Hobbesian male violence. Leave aside as well that the bad dad's preferred form of linguistic expression is a cartoonish approximation of Hemingway; in response to Adam's managerial compassion, he just barks out, "Get away from me.... Thom Yorke James Blackshaw Ital Tek Blawan Rat Heart My top album of 2025, “La Brea” by Hesse Kassel My top song of 2025 by sheer plays, the modern trip hop of “Day You Told Me” by Colle I was a top 500 listener of Angels of Light. Considering how the algorithm lists top songs for the artist on the group’s homepage, I may well have been the only listener.

Her first memory of this trip will not be of the hurried departure to the airport, or the thickness of her father's silence, but of climbing over empty seat rows mid-flight. See her there, looking down through the window at sheets of cloud, cotton smooth, utterly obscuring the black Atlantic. She will clearly remember thinking that coming twelfth year would be a good one. It simply must prove to be so, preceding as it did a year of infamous bad luck. She thinks she is due some good luck. You have seen Regina and imagined this thought in her mind. Now go back and revise. Remove all trace of whimsy. Remove all but the faintest ghost of irony. Consider it, instead, as a kind of futile bargaining with the unknown future. Regina, now twelve and a fledgling woman of the world, trying to find a place for sentiment within herself. Experience makes people, and children especially, strange. There is a certain tension, a certain sense of portent, that builds in the heart when seeing wisdom reveal itself in a child.
