Paintings are in conversation with the history of painting - the status of "painting" elevates the art above drawing, printmaking, weaving, ceramics, and all other art aside from sculpture.

Ink painting is drawing, water color is drawing, gauche is almost painting, yet is drawing still. Oil, acrylic and tempera are painting because people (academics and art historians) are annoying as fuck about it.
