You read that right- there are now 1,500 official bat species known to science!
The Bioko pipistrelle (𝘗𝘪𝘱𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘶𝘴 𝘦𝘵𝘶𝘭𝘢) was found on Bioko Island in Africa’s Equatorial New Guinea by former BCI Student Scholar Dr. Laura Torrent and her colleagues.

⛏️Silverton, Colorado is filled with thousands of old mines between 9,000 and 13,000 ft in elevation. Some bats, like the little brown bat, have been documented at elevations up to 11,000 ft!

The Florida bonneted bat is endemic to south Florida, inhabiting the area south of Orlando to Miami, along both coasts. These bats live 10-20 years, with an average generation time of 5 to 10 years.
