My guess is that the transistors were so much cheaper than tubes that they didn't need to market the new less expensive models much, just let the price tag do the talking

Just my impression, but so far job one seems to be pretty tight lipped about its decision making process, I'd be surprised if they reached out with an ETA for a decision. No harm in thinking about the what-ifs but I wouldn't invest too much planning around that scenario.

Then it's no longer a bluff. Nothing to lose if you reach out in that case - you have another offer waiting if they reject you
