Someone being authentic usually sticks out like a sore thumb. You can tell they’re not using the standard calculus. They’re unafraid of judgment. They openly display their flaws. They usually ask great questions and listen well.

It’s rare and special. I cherish it above most things.

Even if they do, the pull to achieve a certain outcome (including and especially to create a self image that they think will cause them to be viewed a specific way) is so powerful people can’t help but use it as a lens to evaluate each choice. Each word. Each action.

Maybe there are circles where this isn’t the case, but I don’t know many people that are honest with themselves about their wants, needs, dislikes, capabilities, weaknesses, quirks, etc. They don’t see themselves.

For me, authenticity is when someone engages with the world without giving conscious thought to how the world will engage back.

I’m honestly not sure most people are even capable of this in their current state. Self understanding and acceptance is a necessary condition for being authentic.
