🐁 The harvest mouse is Europe’s smallest rodent, a tiny 4–6-gram mammal, classified ‘Near Threatened’ in Britain.

Not much is known about their distribution, but searches by BBOWT volunteers have revealed their nests at several of our reserves, including Chimney Meadows, Wells Farm, and Moor Copse.

🦋 We're incredibly grateful to 13 BBOWT volunteers who braved the cold last week to count 49 brown hairstreak eggs at Bernwood Meadows nature reserve, a significant increase on the 21 counted there in 2023.

🍄 With its glossy, golden-orange caps, the velvet shank is quite commonly seen growing in clusters on stumps of decaying hard wood.

It is also known as the 'Winter Mushroom' as it is one of the few mushrooms that can be seen throughout the winter months.

While scrub provides valuable shelter for birds and insects, too much of it can be a problem for many species which rely on open habitats. Therefore we selectively clear scrub between September and February so as to minimise disturbing wildlife, particularly nesting birds and reptiles.
