That's all I have to report right now.

Remember, just because cases are on the decline, it doesn't mean they're gone. It just means there are fewer cases than there were. You can still get COVID. Please take any precautions that are appropriate for your situation.

Oroville still shows High, but significantly reduced from the Very High levels it was at a few weeks ago. It seems to be declining, but still has a ways to go.

Wastewater data showed cases peaking in Chico in early-to-mid September, and have been on the decline since. For two weeks now, samples have been in the Low category (one just barely in Moderate). No samples have been in the Very High category in several weeks.

(I received mine at Safeway a few days ago with no problems.)

With this week's state recommendation, everyone should now be able to get a vaccine at any location. Please feel free to leave a comment if you have had success or problems at any given pharmacy.

Some insurance companies, including Kaiser Permanente and Anthem Blue Cross, had publicly committed to covering COVID vaccines this year for everyone 6 months and older.

Some pharmacies, including Costco and Safeway, have been providing vaccines for everyone 6 months and older.

💉 Vaccine Availability

Last week's FDA guidance recommended vaccines only to those 65 and older, or those with medical conditions. Despite that, vaccines in California have been generally available.
September 19, 2025 at 11:06 PM
COVID vaccines in California are recommended for everyone 6 months and older, just like the flu, and just like the CDC/FDA guidance we've had since 2021.

Furthermore, insurance carriers are required to cover it here.
September 19, 2025 at 11:06 PM
The state also passed a bill (Assembly Bill 144) that amongst other health-related matters, requires insurance companies to cover the cost of vaccines recommended by the state.

💉 California Vaccine Updates

This week, California (and several other states) announced their own guidance based on the guidance of the CDC and FDA these past several years.

5. If this does impact insurance coverage or availability of vaccines, it could amplify future outbreaks.

Last week, I covered the pushback from medical organizations and several state health departments on this topic.

💉 Vaccines

Recent FDA guidance significantly limited who can get vaccines. Today, they announced that COVID vaccines are linked to child deaths.

Please remember, this is not coming from experts and scientists in the US government.

3. Recommendations generally serve as the basis for insurance coverage. If a vaccine is not explicitly recommended, insurance may not cover the full cost.

4. They do believe COVID vaccines will still be covered by insurance, but it's unclear what their rationale is, from what I can find.
September 19, 2025 at 11:06 PM
There are some important things to note:

1. This doesn't mean they recommend people NOT get the vaccine. Instead, they recommend people make their own choices in consultation with doctors.

2. This differs from flu vaccines, which ARE currently recommended for everyone 6 months and older.

💉 CDC Vaccine Updates

Today, the CDC advisory panel on vaccines voted unanimously to stop recommending COVID vaccines (for all age groups, including 65+), a change from last week's FDA advisory board recommendation.

This is NOT a ban on COVID vaccines.

Even for mild cases, Long COVID is still a real concern. Increased spread of COVID also provides opportunities for the virus to mutate.

For these reasons, it's important to limit exposure to those who are sick with COVID and to get vaccinated.

📊 Trends and Impact

Most of California and the US as a whole is seeing Very High levels of COVID, and most areas are in an upward trend.

While COVID cases are on average less severe than they used to be, many people do get more severe cases.

Public policy is separate from politics (though they can be related), and I'd still prefer to keep politics out of the reports.

That's it for this week. Stay safe, healthy, and carefully informed.

Unfortunately, public policy is a major factor in how health is managed. It dictates what data is available (and how reliable it is) and who has access to vaccines and treatment. This makes it directly relevant to what's happening locally.
