The holodeck can be stupid (it is) AND TNG can be a great series (it is). The two aren’t mutually exclusive. That said, nothing can beat TOS.

He hates Star Trek NG because of the holodeck. And yet he has no problem with TOS transporter, which makes no scientific sense and was only inserted to save a buck.
