The American Dream was great propaganda because, despite following the rules, doing things ‘the right way’, we’re being erased, denigrated. Begrudged because we did what their racism said we couldn’t do.

I think it was DuBois who said the most patriotic American was the middle class ‘Negro’. I know from my own family: men who fought in wars for the freedom they wouldn’t enjoy when they came home. Stressed education, working hard and staying out of trouble. Bought a house, car, had wife, kids.
