If you're not someone who grew up around it/used it a lot, and thus way more used to current controllers (and/or the Gamecube), it's not uncommon to look at/hold it and just be confused at the whole thing.

So at the time, there wasn't much certainty if moving to 3D or staying on 2D was going to be where the industry was going, so the controller's made to do both. You're never meant to use all of the controller at once, only 2/3 of it. Left and right's meant for 2D, center and right for 3D.

I shouldn't be surprised as it's very similar to VC in general (and iirc it's identical to WiiVC for the non-GB games)), but also learning this could've supported GBC to a point is wild
