It's my understanding that the 8 selected Democrats are retiring or not facing re-election campaigns. Still doesn't explain why they decided to cave though.

I think the founding fathers had no concept of how far & wide corruption could spread in a political party, when all elected officials in that party blindly follow one crazed individual without exception.
