Welcome to the Bear Den Hosting Bluesky account! The goal of this account is to talk tech and spread the word of a privacy and security focused managed hosting and private cloud provider that emphasizes individual attention and one-on-one teamwork!

With us, your information is yours - not for sale!

With this said, we will keep a business presence where we can and that list is at bear-den.org.

Tired of it all. Not sure I'll be sticking around on short form social media much; at least, not sure about Bluesky.

arthfach.com/about.shtml if you're curious as to where the bear will be hanging out. Those places might prune down over time too, but I do my best to keep the list up to date.

So since people are once again looking at alternate socials - let's do a thread chain on where people have gone so we can still find each other!

Drop your social in the comments below and repost this top thread so people can find you more easily!

I'll start: @[email protected] (Mastodon/AP)
bear-den.org
We've doubled the amount of storage available on our server, which means that we've got plenty more capacity for anyone who has been on the fence and decides that they want to break free from Big Tech and take control back into their own hands.

We look forward to seeing you taking back control!

And @bear-den.org is willing to help you set one up.

You want a social media you control without the centralization that establishes norms you hate, or the HOA feeling that Mastodon is known for?

We're willing to help you set up your own place that works with Mastodon but is 100% in your control!
pinballswizard.com
i do think people who want the twitter-like experience should also be on mastodon, even if just to plant your flag so people can find you if there is trouble here

it's a very me thing to say, but you can have two of them

What does this mean for you and I?

Start sites about things we care about. Basic HTML isn't hard and it's all that's needed to write something simple. Become passionate and connect with others who are too.

Then, when you're ready, seek out someone like @bear-den.org to help you grow your new site.

Due to concerns about Bluesky as a stable social media and outreach platform, a backup that will mirror posts here has been established at social.arthfach.com/@bearden - accessible on ActivityPub (Mastodon and others) at @[email protected].

This will allow for seamless switching if required.
arthfach.com
I am posting this AGAIN because I live in Virginia and there is a real chance Bluesky, which is deciding to suddenly just comply in advance with every single censorship law in the world, will block VA users from the site without age verification - which I will not do.

The list will be accurate.

I want to be very clear, with DOGE stealing data to feed into an AI:

I am able to be identified through my domain, arthfach.com, or my business domain, bear-den.org.

I am going to keep a list of social media and chats where I am active, with the username, on my website. (arthfach.com/about.html)
bear-den.org
In the meantime, please feel free to look at @fightchatcontrol.bsky.social for information about how you can help potentially halt this terrible, world impacting privacy and security violating legislation - or check out fightchatcontrol.eu for details as well.
Fight Chat Control - Protect Digital Privacy in the EU

To our current and potential EU clients:

We are investigating the impact of the EU's proposed "Chat Control" legislation on the services we are able to offer to EU clients, including the impacts on security and privacy from the legislation.

We will let you know as soon as we do about any changes.

Disabled veteran, small business owner here.

One year of Disney+ could instead get you a full year of web and email hosting, untethered from the whims of corporations, with a private and secure host who will help you get set up and spread your message to the world!

Just a reminder that right now is a fantastic time to take that monthly Disney plus cash and spend it on trans/bipoc/disabled creators and small businesses. Boycotting the bad things is fantastic, but using those funds to then support and uplift those who’ve been marginalized is even better.

At the end of the day, fundamentally, it comes down to "find a provider you trust with the security features you need."

Like me, with Bear Den Hosting ( @bear-den.org ); I do everything in my power to make sure your data is safe and private - only for you and people you choose to share with.
bear-den.org
We'd just like to thank the folks who make Abyss Web Server (aprelium.com) - we gained access to a beta edition of their new version which has significantly improved PHP handling, allowing us to offer our clients better stability and response times on commonly loaded pages.

Thank you!

Pricing update:

Due to the costs to run the online office suite, the price for the bear-den.org private cloud account will be increasing from $5 to $10/month and the price for the PERSONAL hosted cloud server will go from $10 to $20/month (discounts available for both) for new accounts.

Thank you.
bear-den.org
We are pleased to roll out a small update for bear-den.org to clarify offerings and prices (no more paragraph format!) and provide links directly to the intake form for those who wish to use it.
bear-den.org
Hopefully these three points can help provide a little bit of confidence for anyone who may be looking to use our services to host their own personal sites and shops!
bear-den.org
3.) We have fallbacks.

If for whatever reason a government dictates their ISPs to block us by domain, we operate our own DNS server that people can use to find us again and we have multiple fallback domains that we can use to restore service for affected areas.

In short: We can evade tech blocks.
bear-den.org
2.) We are financially stable.

We have enough non-business income to stay alive even if we were locked out from taking payments. This means that a pressure campaign against us from merchants can't - at the present time - stop us from operating.

In short: We can't be choked out as easily as others.
bear-den.org
1.) We are not a direct source for NSFW content.

Bear Den Hosting, fundamentally, is selling server space and technical support to individuals who want to host websites using our servers. We are not the controller of any particular site's content.

In short: We as a business aren't NSFW.
bear-den.org
I want to write a small thread (please remember, short form social media, some context is assumed / left out) about why Bear Den Hosting believes that we can be more of a "safe harbor" for NSFW than some other places such as Neocities.

I am not a lawyer; this is just my interpretation.

As a reminder, @bear-den.org is always willing to provide as safe a harbor as possible given the everything in the world and will fight as hard as possible against these asinine and unjust laws, both legally and through technical means.
literalgrill.com
For anyone that uses Neocities, sharing this from the Fediverse. It looks like if you've got adult content on there, potentially discuss said content, or even just us it for your art gallery... You might want to download your full website and be ready to move just in case...

Fuck censorship!
I want to protect NSFW artists (emphasis on "art"), but if it becomes legally dangerous to do that we won't be able to host that content anymore. I wish I had a better answer for you, I'm as bamboozled by how crazy everything is getting as everybody else is. If the US starts saying we need to check people's drivers licenses to look at an illustration of a furry or whatever we'll have to make changes to deal with that.

We've not always been okay with hosting NSFW content. We don't (have never) envisioned Neocities as a porn hosting platform, and regularly take down sites trying to do this.

I'm working on a new terms of service that will clarify more of this in the near future. In a lot of ways it actually increases what is allowed to be put on a neocities site and increases clarity, but I'll probably get screamed at for it either way. Not looking forward to it.

Reminder, ‪@bear-den.org‬ offers fantastic hosting, brilliant support, and for GMs, hosting your FoundryVTT setup there is buttery smooth.

Looking at a server expansion for Bear Den Hosting. Specifically another one for some back end processing (things like an OnlyOffice Document Server, or a Nextcloud High-Performance Backend instance).

It's juggling finances and a bit of a gamble, admittedly, but could be really useful.
bear-den.org
Updated Debian from v12 to v13 and had a few breaking changes; all should be fixed now (and no, software developers, you should not make BREAKING changes to configuration files on POINT releases).

Please let us know immediately if anything appears broken or not working as expected.

Thank you!

Regarding the nc.bear-den.org private cloud as well, we have now enabled document editing using OnlyOffice! This allows for in-browser editing of office documents such as text files and spreadsheets without needing to use a third party application to do so.

To all nc.bear-den.org users:

We recently performed a small migration that may have caused an infinite login loop with web browser logins. If you were affected, please clear your cookies for bear-den.org and the infinite login loop should be fixed and you will be able to log in again.

Oh for goodness sake.

Hey y'all that use Proton (Mail, VPN, etc.)? Did you know that they are now "vibe coding" their stuff? That is to say, they are using AI to do it?

If you're concerned and want to jump ship, @bear-den.org will not use AI and will keep your privacy safe.

courtesy of @[email protected], Proton is now the only privacy vendor I know of that vibe codes its apps: > In the single most damning thing I can say about Proton in 2025, the Proton Git...
