Pop culture: Men’s 19th century clothing was staid, sober, respectable and dull.

19th century men: Hold my port.
Close up of one pair of trousers from the 1854 H. Clays ad. There is a giant flower made of what looks like appliquéd ribbon at the top of each leg and an appliquéd bow at the bottom. Between them the entire fronts of the trousers look like fishnets — like, actual rope fishing nets tapered proportionally down the trouser leg, but also laid over a netted pattern that looks like classic fishnet stockings.
