I always thought the point was that Sauron wouldn't notice or care about Hobbits. Eagles would be an obvious choice and the flying nazgul would have battled them in the air.

I was lucky that my professors would routinely argue with students in ways that made us prove our points, but never/rarely in ways that felt like bs one upmanship.
