Let me know in the comments if you want a tutorial on how to make these, whether it’s for a gopher-proof planting hole, a structure for shade cloth, a cage to keep deer or rabbits off a special plant, or a very coarse water filter... l

This recipe is also free of coconut coir, perlite, and vermiculite. If you try this mix, let me know how it works for you!

It hates to be transplanted though so you can just plant seeds directly in the soil

It was just a cutting. I soaked it in water for a few days then planted it in my peat-free media. One key is to slightly bruise the stem by bending it gently but firmly, as this encourages the root primordia to wake up and grow… 🌰

Yes! Once the stream power in an incision trench is moderated by these structures and beaver food and construction materials are growing onsite, beavers are often able to come back! That’s where my business name, Beaver Food Forest, comes from — I work to re-establish beaver food on the landscape 🌿🦫

Or, some sites have infrastructure or agricultural constraints and these techniques can provide a way for structure to be added to streams strategically while taking those things into account. Where the streams have space, I’m looking to jumpstart natural processes so that beavers can come back
