Being estranged from a parent, this reads more like a last straw than the main cause of the fallout.

They won’t care. A severe lack of ever wondering what if that was me or someone I loved. No empathy at all. Just self righteousness.

Your wife might be cold and distant as a coping strategy due to emotional abuse or bullying. People sometimes shut down as it feels safer that way. Maybe some counselling for her and for you both as a couple could help.
