Again, I think if Swedes were banned from travelling abroad for a month, with no end date in sight, there would be MUCH more uproar than there is now. But it just affects immigrants, so no one cares, I guess?

This sounds like a minor annoyance but it's a really big deal for some people. I don't have to travel for work, but this is a major issue for (e.g.) researchers who have to turn down international conferences or other work trips due to bureaucracy. Doesn't exactly make Sweden an attractive choice.

CORRECTION: I mean *unable to approve* applications rather than *unable to process* in the first post of this thread. They can still deny applications (which is what they've been doing in the meantime while approvals haven't been possible)

Shout out to @emmalofgren.bsky.social who spotted the unusually high rejection rate for April and emailed the agency to find out more.

They've only been able to process citizenship by notification (Nordic citizens and children), as everyone else needs to go in for an interview. But they can't, as the Migration Agency has no way of offering people interviews. I guess the government got the citizenship moratorium it wanted.

They also haven't told applicants anything about this. I sent my passport and permanent residency card in last month and got my passport back a few days later. They've kept my card (usually a sign that you'll be granted citizenship) and now my application is just paused, with no info at all.

What do you think of plans to tighten Sweden's citizenship rules?
The Swedish government wants to, among other things, increase the amount of time foreigners have to spend in Sweden before becoming citizens. We want to know how our readers feel about the plans.

We know what the government thinks, but what about the opposition? The Centre Party called it "completely unreasonable", while the Greens called it "problematic that basic democratic rights such as voting rights should be dependent on your capacity in the job market." www.thelocal.se/20250114/com...

Är egentligen lite överraskad att ingen på Aftonbladet ställde frågetecken vid den citaten heller. Tror de också att man kan få svensk medborgarskap bara genom att föds här? Och ingen övervägde om det var något man borde dubbelkolla?
