student loans are both an increased marginal tax and a debt; try buying a house with a 50k loan hanging around your neck. Once again the system favours students from richer families to benefit from HE and get on in life. Why not just turn it into a straightforward graduate tax?

My guess is that in the US, the flag was a symbol of independence from Britain, while here we haven't needed that symbolism, given the history of the British empire...

Exactly. This behaviour of US presidents runs throughout history; it's just always had a veneer of acceptability over it, in the past.
Now the mask is off, there's nothing to stop all authoritarian regimes to wreak havoc wherever they please.
