Over on the Gelman blog, there's a post about this histogram of z-scores in published papers. I'm always baffled by the discourse around it. Why is this plot a symptom of a problem? Under what model would we expect this to be a bell curve?

The list of signatories on the latest "Please Skynet, don't kill us" letter is BONKERS.

Hah, that's a fun takeaway.

Let's also not forget that the author of that substack is a horrible dork too. At the same time Bubeck was lying about GPT websearch, that guy was bragging about his nonsense AGI psychometrics paper with hallucinated references.

Now that's what I call probability!

I'm not much of a college football guy, but as with most things related to "moneyball," it's not a particularly good article.

Apparently, in the latest GPT5 hullabaloo over on Twitter, the definition of open meant "not known to a guy maintaining a website."

If anyone wants a counterargument against AGI, look at this three-year chatGPT regression and its persistent denial of facts plain as day.

I'm always haunted by the splash image for your Boston Review essay.

Possible addendum: The bots replying to me on Twitter suggest our world is a pastiche of Philip K Dick and Paul Verhoeven.

This graphic, from your webpage, is the banal evil I'm talking about.

One extra AI Safety tidbit for this morning: Anthropic's Claude refused to transcribe this passage by Allen Wood (h/t @hilzoy.bsky.social) because it violated their safety protocols.

PS. I wouldn't do my man Paul F. dirty. He's misunderstood but totally brilliant and hard to disagree with. But he's also a terrible communicator. :)

Can't be real.

I've started thinking about my fall semester syllabus.

Moore's plot is so much jankier. You have to give the man credit, though, he was fucking right.
