Another factoid, the NWS budget represents about 0.02% of the total federal budget.

$1.38 billion spent on NWS.
$102.1 billion returned in estimated public value.
Those values produce a return on investment (ROI) of 73.98.

(Yet NOAA has long been **underfunded** as Scott Rayder noted last year: www.federaltimes.com/opinions/202...)
NOAA’s budget is too small. That’s costing the US billions of dollars
Opinion: With a fiscal year 2024 budget of $6.3 billion, the nation’s leading weather and climate agency remains significantly underfunded.

Learned how to make churros today! 🤤🇲🇽 #mexico

Apparently rewatching Ted Lasso is paying off considering how I just soccer dribbled the hell out of a bee that was just repeatedly dive bombing me 😬

I love it when I can go #birding in my backyard! I spotted at least 6 different species yesterday morning including a new lifer. Still trying to spot the cinnamon-bellied saltator that keeps singing from the top of the tamarind tree🤞

Returning to Mexico calls for tacos and tortas and agua de Jamaica! Soooooo good! 🤤

Well, I'm about 3/4 of the way thru this first beer and I have already killed 3 mosquitoes. However, the number of bites exceeds that, so they're winning 😭.

I may have to wear my snorkeling tights and booties whenever I wanna drink outside here 😂

Camera timer to make it look like I have friends here other than the mosquitoes 😂. Mérida 🇲🇽 is off to a good start, it's a shame I'm too exhausted to go wander around. Instead, I think I'll drink the beer my Airbnb host left for me and order delivery for lunch/dinner 😁

Ugh, checking a bag sucks. I don't mind waiting in airports, but waiting at baggage claim is the worst 😒

The hits just keep on coming on this trip as last night was anything but restful. Was startled awake after about an hour due to paper thin walls magnifying sounds next door like a megaphone. Worse, had this little demon biting the hell out of my legs. Don't believe it's a bed bug, but it was awful.

0430 @ MEX and there's a waiting list for the lounge near me. I stand by my previous feelings towards major airports: they're awful compared to small ones. Give me an empty lounge with a comfy seat and a couple snacks in an aeropuero pequeño anyway.

Shuttle only runs at the top of the hour and I'm not gonna risk missing another flight. FML 🤦‍♂️ #travel

Lesson learned: don't fly into MIA on a Saturday evening. Landed in Terminal E, baggage took forever, global entry line was long, baggage check was closed.

Finally on my flight out of Barbados. Gonna be a mildly long #travel "day" after the 6 hours I just spent in BGI. 4 hours to MIA, 90 minute layover, 3.5 hours to MEX. Then 6 hours in a hotel until 2 hours to Mérida tomorrow. At least I got plenty of leg room in the exit row on rebooking 🤷‍♂️😝

Turned 43 yesterday. Flying from Barbados to Mérida 🇲🇽 today and it's not going well.

My ride to the airport this morning showed up an hour late. He arrived AFTER I got the notification that my flight was boarding and I have a checked bag after spending the last 18+ months traveling carry-on only.

Spending my 43rd birthday in Barbados the way a single man does....by eating the rest of the food in my Airbnb, doing laundry, packing my backpack, drinking half a bottle of wine, and binge re-watching Ted Lasso before my flight to Mérida, Mexico tomorrow morning. #partyhard😆

Branding 101: put birds on your label and a #birdnerd like me will probably buy it... especially if it's booze.

Wooo finally off backorder!!! Excited to take this beast (and potentially an extender) on my wildlife adventures next year in Borneo, Komodo, and Uganda/Burundi/DRC. Next up is to upgrade from my 9+ year old 6D to an R5. 📸🤘😃🤘

🕊️ Grenada Dove📍Mount Hartman Visitor Center • St. George's, #Grenada

This unassuming bird is like 90% of why I decided to spend a weekend in Grenada. With an estimated population of less than 140 and declining, the critically endangered Grenada Dove is the most exciting bird I've spotted.

#Rihanna songs playing in the supermarket when you're grocery shopping in Barbados just hits different. No wonder she has a street named after her here 🤘

I've been in Barbados for just over 3 weeks now and one thing has become abundantly clear to me.

While I love having easy access to snorkeling, I'm not built for the heat and humidity of the tropics 🥵

Beats the hell out of flying in economy seats, too! 🛫
In the movies, when a superhero’s friend finds out about their secret powers they always feel betrayed and lied too and get really mad at the superhero but I genuinely think my response would be “holy shit you can fly? Can you take me to Seattle so I don’t have to make 3 connections?”
