in another life, we were arsonists
My teenage years span 1975-1980 which were mostly defined by rock n’ roll with an underpinning of singer/songwriters, country-rock, outlaw country, & bluegrass. 1980 saw me falling head over heels for reggae, ska, & rocksteady.

The more you seek out neuroplasticity, the likelier you are to remember things, learn new skills, adapt to environments & protect yourself from cognitive decline. (Some call this dementia prevention.)”

Neuroplasticity, as a reminder, refers to the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life. Why would we want this sort of restructuring to begin with? Because an ever-rewiring brain is also a more resilient, or ‘youthful,’ one.

What I saw very little of is why so many of us still enjoy listening to & discovering new music. Oddly enough, this was posted in that radio group:

“…there are serious health benefits to listening to unfamiliar music. Introducing new artists and new songs increases the plasticity of our brains.

When I was still on FB I ran into a lot of resistance to new music, especially in a group I belonged to for folks who previously worked in radio (& some that are still in it). Over time, I read enough articles on the topic to understand why they prefer to live in the past.

I’m late to the game but yesterday, I finally got around to checking out the new album from Briscoe. Icing on the cake was learning it was produced by Brad Cook & includes more than a few guest musicians I also know of through the NC music scene.

Small world. I’m a huge fan of hers and had the honor of doing a few shows with her when I was promoting live music events in the Triangle region of NC.

If I receive a call from a number that’s not in my contacts I don’t answer the phone. If they don’t leave a voicemail (and sometimes even if they do), I block the number.
