Developing a nuclear weapon would let Iran act with impunity in funding proxy groups. Once safe from attack, it would have little reason not to back them fully, shifting the regional balance. This is why few in the region support Iran when it is attacked—it’s not in their interest.

Iran seeks deterrence by exploiting sectarian divides, particularly through Shia Islam, and by building paramilitary proxies like Hezbollah and militias in Iraq, Syria, and Yemen to extend its influence and counter regional hostility.

Iran is well aware that it lacks significant deterrent capabilities and that it is surrounded by countries that harbor deep-rooted, even existential, hostility toward it.

That sounds like a denial of Jewish national identity, reducing Jews to merely a religious group and treating them as a subset of another nation.
