i wrote an afterward about bobby weir for @pitchfork, though probably could've kept going for a few more days. https://pitchfork.com/features/bob-weir-obituary/
Bob Weir’s Cosmic Touch
The inimitable Bobby Ace played guitar alongside Jerry Garcia for over three decades. His unique style and merry personality helped shape the sound and spirit of the Grateful Dead, and his lifelong dedication to the band helped make them immortal.

After coincidentally listening to 4 of them this week, I might as well round off my pantheon of North Carolina-born musicians:

Elizabeth Cotten (b. 1893, Carrboro)
Thelonious Monk (b. 1917, Rocky Mount)
Doc Watson (b. 1923, Deep Gap)
Earl Scruggs (b. 1924, Cleveland Co.)
John Coltrane (b. 1926 […]

What shall we say, shall we call it by a name
As well to count the angels dancing on a pin
Water bright as the sky from which it came
And the name is on the earth that takes it in
We will not speak but stand inside the rain
And listen to the thunder shout
I […]

Egberto Gismonti - Sol do Meio Dia (ECM, 1978)

It's an ECM decompression kind of night, and a first listen at that, Gismonti (8-string guitar, kalimba, wood flute, piano, voice, bottle) with a rotating ensemble inc. Nana Vasconcelos, Ralph Towner, Colin […]

This is wild! "The Devil Went Down to Deep Gap" Bryan Sutton with Billy Strings.

It's a re-imagining of the Charlie Daniels song with the Devil (Del McCoury) going down to Deep Gap where he encounters Doc Watson (voiced and guitar picking by Billy Strings).

The video features animated versions […]

I'm late to the party (3 episodes in) but can't recommend this Fela Kuti podcast highly enough. A masterful mix of storytelling, musicology, and immersive audio production led by Jad Abumrad (Radiolab, etc.). Mesmerizing, like Fela's music.

not a resolution per se, but once I finish cataloging my records (currently in the T's) I think I'll give the ole cd collection a spin. I've almostly entirely resorted to vinyl/streaming in recent years. It will be fun to rediscover the bulk of my music from the 90s-2000s, and a relief to my […]

might have to play 12/30/97 encore as a palate cleanser #phish

by no means a top shelf 12/30 #phish show - especially not with this encore - but an enjoyable night from the couch. SOAM through Crosseyed improv was very solid. Plus I got to crank the stereo and hang with my buddy Heath like old times.

I'm a fan of jazz, hip-hop, jazz rap, and other forms of jazz × hip-hop fusion. I geek out when I hear an original song I recognize from a sample, and vice versa.

On CREAM, Kassa Overall and his band tapped into that sentiment but took a different, fresh approach. They reimagined a set of 90s […]

12" with tracks from Next ft. Black Thought, Talib Kweli, Hi-Tek, Amel Larrieux.

Neal Evans' left hand bass (can't be a B3... Roland?) bumps on my system.

I think it's great that Medeski & Martin are playing occasional improv sets with Metzger & Cline, but 20 years into the Wood Bros affair maybe it's time they stop deferring to Chris and recruit another bassist for a trio (+) tour that revisits the #mmw canon while exploring new directions.
