Some of our @antiquaries.bsky.social treasures out on display for our special "Illuminated" Open Friday today ✨💖🌟 Open until 4pm!

As part of our spring illuminations celebration tomorrow I've also been looking for modern books to show alongside the medieval orginals. These 1860s books on Illuminating are like works of art in their own right, with decorated gold bindings & wood-engraved or chromolithiographed plates.

You know you're amongst good company when you receive an enquiry from a librarian in Australia, asking about how the binding of one of our 18thC books compares to their copy, and the reply comes back "...of course, yours is a presentation copy (hot d͟a͟m͟n͟...)" 😅

From the latest @britishlibrary.bsky.social newsletter... not a manuscript! Of all the places who'd mix those up... 🤐😅

Excited to say I'm one of the speakers at this year's Broadsides Day, taking place at Cecil Sharp House on 22nd February. I'll be talking about @antiquaries.bsky.social's collection of 19thC Cork ballads, now catalogued after a mere 150 years. We got round to it eventually! 🙌

This week's surprise book find @antiquaries.bsky.social: a lovely gold-tooled copy of a 1580 handbook of French verbs, with these charming 18th-century coloured drawings of fruits (and a broom?). Perhaps those of Lucy Strong, who signed "her booke" at the back.

#herbook #rarebooks #printedbook
A highly-decorated gold-tooled binding, in brown calf, of a printed book from 1580. The last leaf of an open book from 1580; the left is printed, with the inscription "Lucy Strong her booke" written on either side of the printer's mark (woodcut). The right side, a blank endpaper, has five coloured drawings of fruits (pears, blackberries, plums or damsons) with leaves attached to the stems. The title-page of "The treasurie of the French tong: teaching the waye to varie all sortes of verbes" by Claudius Hollyband, printed in London in 1580. The endpaper on the left side has a coloured drawing of what looks like a broom (ie. twigs bundled at one end) pointing upwards.

How long did it take you part time, dare I ask?

A lot of hard work and dedication, I imagine! 👏 I've seen two really interesting libray-related LAHP PhDs come up recently but I absolutely couldn't hack it working full time. Maybe when I retire 😂

The #Avebury #henge complex is one of the most impressive in Britain. #Stukeley first visited the site in 1719, his interest aroused by reading John Aubrey’s suggestion that the Ancient Britons were responsible for building the stone circles.

Great @efdss.bsky.social lecture tonight by Dr Peter Harrop on "prog folk" and different ways of thinking about modern folklore(sque) customs, art, radicalism, inclusivity vs. first wave of folk revival... a lot to digest and ponder!

A few nice 17th-century bindings on printed books one of my volunteers is working on, adding Albert Way FSA's ownership provenance to our library catalogue. Always a good surprise to find a contemporary binding (especially armorial) when pulling a rather dismal burgundy box off the shelf!
Three large late-16th/17th century printed books, bound in brown leather. Two have armorial stamps of their 17th-century owners; one is in gold.
