Good morning from a college campus where I'm once again wildly gesturing toward the crosswalk sign to remind approaching drivers that they shouldn't speed through and they do actually need to stop for pedestrians

Etymonline is one of the most underappreciated sole-curator resources on the internet. Its not made by a company, just a very wonderfully lyrical person who does it as a labor of love.

Last year I pickled my green tomatoes. This year I think I might make them into a chutney
belehaa.wandering.shop.ap.brid.gy
Tonight we're expecting a frost, so I went out in the dark and made my last harvest for the season. The pepper plants put out lots of fruit this year, but not until late, so now I have a bunch of green peppers instead of fully ripe red ones. The tomatoes were […]

Four punnets of vegetables: about a quart of green cherry tomatoes, part of a quart of small green peppers, a pint of red cherry tomatoes, and part of a pint of cherry tomatoes that are ripening from green to orange on their way to red

A leucistic white beaver lives in Eastern Ontario.

An Ottawa photographer and a recently retired Carleton University professor went out near Perth to follow up on reports. Yes, they successfully captured it on photos.

"To see a totally white beaver with dark eyes and a dark foot, that's […]

I don't actually want to annotate the PDFs anyway. I just want to view the assignments while using the rubric without littering mg computer with dozens of downloaded files of student data that I will forget to trash
belehaa.wandering.shop.ap.brid.gy
Whyyy doesn't Moodle let you resize the image in the "annotate pdf" grading view? Half my students have submitted really big PDFs and the preview just shows the top corner of the page 🤦🏼‍♀️ To see anything else I have to download the file which entirely defeats the purpose of the preview window

This back-eyed Susan bloom is MASSIVE! My large hand is shown for scaled #bloomscrolling.
A massive black-eyed Susan bloom, over 12 cm in diameter, with long yellow petals still unfurling around a large brown center.

I'm enjoying the 'Firepot' dahlias so much right now. I think the colors really resonate with me.

A many-petaled, waterlily style dahlia with orange and yellow petals with magenta edges. A recent rainstorm left water droplets on the petals, with most on the bottom half of the petals. The flower is mostly open, although the very center is still a tight knot of unopened petals

The Ballad of the Saskatchewan Goat-Sitter

(chorus)
Oh it's cold in the morning
It's fucking cold outside
There's frost on the hay bales
You can't stay warm if you tried
But the goats need their breakfast
So it's to the barn you go
At the break of day you bring the hay
And the […]

A funny song about the current state of affairs. This time about the attacks on science and research from the far right (a.k.a. Trump administration) in the US.

Your annual reminder that modern physics is done in diverse teams of anything between 1 and 1000 people, by people of all backgrounds imaginable.

Breakthroughs are not made single-handedly by at most 3 white men. Arguably they never were.

With the recent influx of newcomers from #bluesky , it behooves us to contemplate what we can do to improve #moderation on the #fediverse - something that has been a problem in the past, and is one of the major reasons why the Fediverse is not as big and as diverse as it could be.

The first and […]

Funny how so many people who've never taught think the only thing to worry about with #AI in #education is students using it to cheat.

I'm not worried about student using AI to cheat. I'm worried about how AI is cheating students.

I can't be the only person out there who ends up twisted around inside with the conflict between "Thank you for doing the thing for me" and "No thank you for doing something different than I asked"

I try to say the first thing and let go of the second one, but letting go is hard

(And obviously […]
