Vilnius: sure you'd never get "board"

Not gonna lie, I misread "plants" as "potatoes"

Irish Embassy Vilnius is in the former HQ of what became the Lithuanian Independence movement.

Parishioners from the Catholic Cathedral opposite came after Mass to read indy notices.

When the building was being secured for Embassy they deliberately kept the noticeboard open out of respect.

Poor planning on my part meant I couldn't get inside Lukiškių kalėjimas - the old prison where they filmed some scenes for Stranger Things. It's now an arts space, concert venue, etc. with a series of bars & food trucks.

On a chilly Monday afternoon in October the courtyard was starting to fill up.

Swallowed my pride and slipped up to the Radisson Blu's Skybar for an afternoon's overpriced cocktails hoping the view would be as good as I'd heard.

Alas (for their bottom line), it was closed.

Happily (for you, dear followers), the view from the corridor outside the closed Skybar is just fine.

This trip: just Vilnius.

That's 2/3 Baltics this year. Thought Estonia was no-go as no direct flights, but they've just restarted...

Question is: can I hack another Baltic winter?

(Real q is: will Mrs Boon let me go this side of January!)

November: London #1001Beers
December: Kerstbierfest

The old Mary J. Uana grows wild in Lithuania but it's so cold the THC doesn't develop...Instead they cook & brew with it.

Few years ago however, after two record-breaking heatwave summers, a certain German retailer mysteriously recalled some products lest thrifty customers got buzzed!

Behind me: C.U.P. - former Soviet supermarket where the shelves were mostly empty most of the time.

To my left: former Hotel Lietuva where foreigners stayed. Wired for sound & staffed by KGB.

Now, across Constitution St: Europa Sq & the council building shows how they feel about Moscow these days!

Šnipiškės is a hangover from Soviet era: unpaved roads, wooden houses w/out plumbing (some w/out mains electricity), all within the shadow of skyscrapers & large cranes.

Primo real estate.

You need a permit to demolish...so many houses simply catch fire.

This is known as the Belfast phenomenon.
