As County Chairs of the New Hampshire Democratic Party, we stand with Congresswoman Maggie Goodlander and her colleagues in Congress, veterans, national security professionals, and public servants who are now facing threats from the President of the United States simply for doing their duty and honoring their oath to the Constitution. The President has publicly attacked Democratic veterans and former intelligence officers, using intimidation and calls for violence to silence dissent. We condemn political violence in all forms. It has no place in a democracy, and no American, regardless of party, should ever be threatened for speaking the truth or upholding the law. These lawmakers are being attacked by President Trump for reminding service members of a simple and essential principle: no member of the military is obligated to follow an unlawful order. That is not insurrection. That is the rule of law. A President whose orders comply with the Constitution should have no reason to fear this reminder. The law is crystal clear. The Manual for Courts-Martial states that an order is not lawful if it violates the Constitution or directs a crime. The Department of Defense Law of War Manual affirms that service members have a duty to refuse clearly illegal orders. These principles protect both our military and our democracy. We are thankful to Congresswoman Goodlander and all who uphold their oath with courage and integrity. They will not be intimidated. They will not be silenced. And they should not stand alone.
