Ha! I think it belonged to a great aunt of mine. Certainly, on the Italian/Catholic side of my family. Glad you recognised it!

Not saying it isn't important! Simply that in our teaching, we have come to put too much emphasis on it. Especially early on.

We're fighting a battle on many fronts. Imho, one of the best ways to fight that battle is to actually make it more fun. But I may be biased, because I find the actual evidence to be the fun bit...!

Eek - keep with it! It's usually better in the later stages, if/when they finally let you have your own opinions...

Yes, though I would extend that into lower undegraduate. However, in some subjects (art history e.g.) the demands for historiography can be suffocating. This may be because it's a field which has become increasingly theoretical, and this requires deference to previous theories.

Yes indeed; my point is about where we find the balance. This needs addressing imho right back to GCSE level. It's a) turning students off the subject and b) inevitably going to be trouble for an AI generation.

Sure, but imo that approach carries too much emphasis nowadays. An argument should be based on evidence. How it fits in with other people's arguments is of limited importance.

As much as I want to resist the scourge of AI in universities, I think this issue also highlights how we place too much emphasis on historiography. As in, 'while Prof. X says this, Prof. Y says that'. It's no wonder students seek to summarize it. Empiricism will be more AI-proof.

productive discussion about AI in classes w colleagues today. one thing that was clarified for me: while so much attention has been on instructors making AI-proof writing assignments the use of AI to "summarize" readings (often wrongly) seems more pervasive & hard to root out

Ha. No worries. You made an important point!

Thanks. As far as I can see, your thesis is about Glasgow bars, not the Manet painting? But either way, there are usually multiple interpretations for pictures like this, and often that's the intention. I think it's still a stretch to go from that to, 'W&B say all women in art were prostitutes'...

Hurrah! Glad you are on team Swan. Thanks!
