Oh yeah! Both games have the same director, Tokuhiro Takemori. You can see some asset reuse, like the skeletons move similarly to some of the cavemen enemies in Legendary Axe. The 1UP sprites are similar, too.

The Astyanax looks reminiscent of The Legendary Axe: the axe swinging animation, the charging of axe power over time, the design of the pick-ups...

I wonder if there's any crossover in the development teams or any inspiration between the two.

I'll miss the beautiful and super cool Mr. Gimmick, but I don't think I was ever going to finish that incredibly difficult game.
