I don’t think Altman (for example) is a bad person or even a negligent one for failing to predict this emergent problem. If you like, it’s a “end of Fallout 1” situation: you’re a hero, but you have to leave.

Humans are also very bad at “shut up when we can’t answer”. The truly cursed thing about the LLM is that it lies as freely and fluidly as we do, but in a manner that is different enough from ours that it evades the specialized defenses we have developed against living among a bunch of constant liars

I’ve been encouraging mine to take advantage of the fact that there are no rules today and I will not be mad and will in fact prefer to clean the carpet than go outside for even a minute, but they aren’t getting it.

Yeah the thing people forget about the Titanic is that it really was remarkably sink-resistant! The lesson, other than the one everyone gets about hubris, is also: sometimes you prepare and plan for the exact scenario that happens to you and you still just fail completely.
