Grant application submitted. A good feeling, but also a little like sending a much cossetted child out to face wolves.

Also, Hermione is clearly ripping off Mary Poppins

Things have got bad in UK HE when a department like Leicester Chemistry is facing these measures. Solidarity to all the staff picketing today.

I don’t want to be on a picket line today. I’d rather be teaching my students or in the lab with @kilpatrickgroup.bsky.social - not standing in the rain outside my own workplace.

But the threat of compulsory redundancies and cuts to @leicesterchem.bsky.social 🇬🇧🥈leaves us no real choice.

I'd like to read this article, unfortunately I don't have access! Accessibility issue with article on accessibility (albeit of different sorts) feels sad

"We sat down and ate the pears from the tree before the rain came."
Preschool sounds amazing. Of course, this bucolic scene probably involved a lot more spit, thrown pears and chaos than suggested.

We need a hard number from the RSC to defend against attempts to erode chemistry depts access to lab and technician time in an environment where universities are looking to cut out anything expensive. I agree with the idea that we should put more problem solving into the labs, though.

It's definitely discrimination against chemists, who else needs a subscript five times in every line? I hate it so much.

Today is International Non-Binary People's Day and the first day of Non-Binary Awareness Week

The day was first celebrated in 2012, started by Katje van Loon. The date was chosen for being precisely midway between International Women's Day and International Men's Day.

Good to see you today @sandykilla.bsky.social, can't stop laughing at this photo where it looks like I'm your smaller second head

I am reminded this week of the Ben Elton novel Blind Faith, which, over a decade ago, seemed like one of the more far fetched dystopian novels I'd read. I don't think I'd feel so complacent, if I read it again. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blind_F...

Being married to a physicist, I get told this most days. But there is no point using something that nobody else I work with uses.

Why did Word have to make the painful process of grant writing even more excruciating by changing the keyboard shortcuts for subscript and superscript? Chemists everywhere are surely cursing as loudly as me. #chemsky

Happy #pride month! We believe that chemistry is for everyone. In the face of opposition that threatens the progress we've made, it's never been more important for us to promote equality of opportunities and make chemistry as open, inclusive and diverse as it should be: buff.ly/1dShs0l #ChemSky

This is important and useful stuff! It does make me sad as an organometallic chemist that all my favourite solvents are in the 'avoid' column. My poor toxic friends we must replace you.

UCU are petitioning for a better funding model for UK higher education. It is a bad time to work for a UK university right now, and we are all feeling it. I'm not sure signing this will help, but it never hurts to try.
