Journalist challenge: Use “Machine Learning” when you mean machine learning and “LLM” when you mean LLM. Ditch “AI” as a catch-all term, it’s not useful for readers and it helps companies trying to confuse the public by obscuring the roles played by different technologies. 🧪

Two years ago, Dustin Tyler shared with me and Rachel Jakes his idea of using the strength-duration curve to efficiently calibrate neurostimulation parameters. Yesterday, our first paper validating this methodology and exploring its applications was published in the Journal of Neural Engineering!

It's critical to find places to refine, reduce, and replace animals in research. I am also optimistic about AI accelerating science. But we need to be realistic and guided by data. Right now, the scope of scientific questions where we know enough to replace biology with AI wholesale is miniscule.
