Hong Kong / Halifax, urban & transportation things
I'm sorry Reg. The situation in hospitals is unconscionable.

I also miss many aspects of the grubby and affordable Halifax of the recent past (aside from the stagnancy and empty lots).

We don't have well-established minority communities (like those in Toronto) to counterbalance Nova Scotian nativism. It's hard to put down roots and start a family if you've been priced out of home ownership. If you don't own a car, you are scapegoated for congestion by a populist mayor. Why come?

That was the late 2010s. Today, Halifax offers young people crushing housing costs on par with big cities, the worst small-city traffic congestion in Canada (with no higher-order transit alternative in sight), suffocating car culture, and worsening racism especially toward South Asians.

After spending years answering to old-school Hong Kong traffic engineers and frankly accomplishing very little, the changing culture in Halifax – expressed in new planning and transit policy, and through investment in projects such as the Central Library – looked sooo appealing from afar.

I wish cycle infrastructure was a priority. If that was the case, we might actually have the network of safe bikeways that we were promised under the Integrated Mobility Plan by 2022, and bike lanes would constitute more than a tiny proportion of the capital budget.

This is contrary to his mayoral platform, in which Fillmore pledged to implement BRT, make transit reliable by reducing delays, and put transit user experience first – all things that depend on transit priority (e.g. dedicated bus lanes) to get buses through areas clogged with car traffic.

at least there are bike lanes

Halifax’s bike network plan is being implemented slowly, piecemeal, even apologetically, as if inviting the growth of an opposition that is now gradually bringing it to a halt. It’s like we’ve been trying to give ourselves an allergy to bike lanes. #BikeHfx

Yes, not everyone who attends the hospital can walk, cycle, or take transit. The QEII has nearly 8,000 employees. Providing safe and dependable alternatives to driving would help to free up parking for those who need it.

We did everything to make driving the most attractive option, at the expense of providing safe and reliable alternatives to driving, and people drove. Who could have foreseen this?

really exciting to see the old rail line (#3) being considered for a multi-use path
