The revitalized Justice Society of America is really a tale of two comics as the character work is charming, particularly with the newcomers, but a lot of the violence goes way over the top. Dale Eaglesham is delivering though. Jeromy Cox also brings range and depth to the coloring.

Even if Doctor Strange No. 4 weren’t a good enough time as a one-off featuring Wong’s new adventures with WAND, the great Andy MacDonald and KJ Diaz art would set it apart. Jed MacKay nails dry pithy dialogue while cycling through cool new concept at rapid pace.

William Messner-Loebs is only credited as guest writer on Impulse No. 30, but the skill with which he jumps into what I presume are ongoing plots amidst Genesis illustrates one of comics’ all-time pros.

Untold Tales of Spider-Man No. 6 has a clever and classic Wizard scheme that feels just Silver Age enough, but Kurt Busiek also taps the Spidey/Human Torch dynamic nicely. Throw in some soap opera as well as the fact that Pat Olliffe depicts a killer Johnny Storm.

I’m so used to Kelley Jones drawing Batman, but it turns out he’s the perfect Lobo artist. Steve Orlando has one of the best takes I’ve seen on the Main Man, plumbing some depth in a fun odd couple story also featuring Black Canary.

The Evolutionary War has been a dull slog on the whole, but Walter Simonson does his best to end on a high note with Avengers Annual No. 17 and a rag tag band of heroes highlighted by the loquacious Beast and surly Hulk.

JSA revitalized existing Golden Age characters with notable additions, but Justice Society of America goes all in on big swings with hit or miss results. I find Wildcat’s son and Maxine Hunkel to be the rookies with the most genuine beast, but everybody has something.

Cosmic Ghost Rider was fine as far as a one off gag in other stories, but I’m not convinced there’s enough there to carry multiple mini series. Additionally, this feels so far afield of Frank Castle at this point that the identity is more a hindrance than a help.

Batman No. 547 is a damn near operatic look at what normal people can do in the face of Armageddon as Doug Moench looks at Genesis through the prism of Oracle and The Dark Knight, but also Alfred and Harvey Bullock. Moench nails it and the unparalleled Kelley Jones art seals the deal.

Untold Tales of Spider-Man Annual No. 1 is one of the most enjoyable experiences I have had in a long time. Mike Allred drawing Spidey, the FF and Namor is perfect. Kurt Busiek spells out this book’s mission statement of capturing the quirk of the Silver Age with modern flourish.

Liseth Vok, central antagonist of the arc A World of Our Own in Green Lanterns, makes for a layered and compelling threat courtesy of writer Tim Seeley putting in work on big ideas. The art team of Ronan Cliquet and Hi-Fi picks up the baton and brings the cool action.

Spectacular Spider-Man Annual No. 8 is a mixed bag from the great writer Gerry Conway as he can write Peter, MJ and Gwen Stacy in his sleep but the Young Gods guest spot and general Evolutionary War stuff if less inspired. It’s always neat to see early Mark Bagley work though.

I remember working to promote the launch of Justice Society of America with Wizard and being so impressed with the level of enthusiasm Geoff Johns had to rejuvenate the property yet again with new characters and ideas—that holds up. Dale Eaglesham was on the very top of his game here.
