Migration (human circulation) policy, voluntary migrant to Vancouver Island, should play guitar more often, stravaiger, pilgrim; the trail is always better on foot; minds, like borders, books and windows, are better when open; time moves crabwise.

The Canadian government's revamped border-infosec-migrant bill is out and it still bars asylum-seekers from getting a refugee hearing if they file a claim more than a year after first coming to Canada. (And the gov can still "cancel, suspend or vary" your immigration dox) www.parl.ca/DocumentView...

Who becomes a scientist, what kind of work does she do, and why? Generations of women in China have explored these questions. For @madeinchinajournal.com, I trace their stories and the different answers their struggles and achievements reveal—on the purpose of science and the meaning of womanhood.

🍄🧪🚨GLOW-IN-THE-DARK TREE SCIENCE🚨🧪🍄

Scientists have identified 125 species of bioluminescent fungi, and there are likely many more. One of the latest discoveries is a species that doesn't just glow on its own -- trees interlaced with its filaments also emit an ethereal greenish light (!!)

Laura Rodriguez, on Twitter:

A federal agent points a weapon at a woman who was recording them.

Jess, a U.S. citizen and member of a neighborhood patrol team that documents and shares ICE activity across the city, was filming when the incident occurred earlier today in the Berwyn area.

I spoke to a Venezuelan woman who was arrested in this raid and later released with her 4yo son. She said agents broke down their door, pointed guns at them and made sexualized remarks about Venezuelan women. When she returned to her apartment it was boarded up and all her possessions were gone.

Thank you @yangyangcheng.bsky.social for another wonderful piece and a window into a world many of us might have otherwise missed.

For @npr.org, I review Lou Ye's acclaimed Covid movie "An Unfinished Film," its courage in venturing into the forbidden, and limitations in what it seems unable or unwilling to confront. The Chinese people deserve better, more honest stories. The work remains unfinished.

U.S. officials describe the Darién Gap as a hotbed of human trafficking and mortal peril. That’s not inaccurate, but it fails to account for just how much of that is America’s own fault.

India's Prime Minister Modi made his first visit to Manipur in two years, since ethnic and insurgent violence erupted in the state. Tanushree Pandey recently explored how civilians are caught in the crossfire and the lines between combatants and noncombatants blur:
