I also don't think Los Angeles does this. When people from LA say "LAX" they seem to exclusively mean the airport.

MSP is the same way. It's a common abbreviation for Minneapolis - St. Paul, but probably not *because* of the airport code, it's just an obvious initialism.

Also I think this might be more or less true by city. I've definitely seen people say PDX/MSP/SEA to mean the cities generally, but if I heard "LAX" or "JFK" I would assume they meant the airport specifically. (Or in the latter case, possibly the guy.)

I got bit recently by a spreadsheet library that returned cell values as "any". And the idiot* who wrote the surrounding code assumed the values would always be string or null, without a runtime check. Worked until someone entered a name as "5", and it returned a number.

My company just upgraded to M365 and grammar check has been a disaster. Some of its suggestions are like you say, but a lot are just absolute nonsense. "Fixes" that would make the sentence not make any sense.
