You are the one who got shot.” “Because you saw it happen,” Eddie says, unable to keep a smirk from his face. Buck gets it; being pissed at someone for not having trauma is something Eddie would absolutely give him shit for under different circumstances. “I don’t remember a thing. I was gone and then I woke up. But you…” Buck’s knee grows ice cold when Eddie removes his hand to reach for the tequila bottle. “You apparently know what I taste like. That’s something that will stick with you.” “Your blood,” Buck corrects. “I don’t know what you taste like.” He can see Eddie gulp while pouring the next shot, sees his throat work as he swallows something down that should never see the light of day. He eyes him curiously, and when Eddie turns to him to hand him his shot, he raises his eyebrows in question. It’s enough. Eddie stares at him for a moment, then: “Would it help if you knew what I taste like? While alive and well and breathing?”

Black text on white ground: Eddie isn’t sure he’s ever felt real love. If he has, it’s gone now. He remembers him, the boy they tried to keep him from. The boy he met in secret in the darkness of the basements, in the shadows behind the barracks. He remembers the pain of the punishment when they were caught and the way it was worth it every single time. The softness of his lips making up for the sting of the whip, the way he felt so safe in the hands that mere hours ago had sent a bullet into a creature threatening to take their lives. Black text on white ground: They don’t talk. They’ve never talked, weren’t allowed to, had to hide and be quiet. Eddie is dragged inside, placed on something soft. Buck undresses him, peels the wet rags off his skin and swaddles him in dry blankets like an infant, warmth settling in muscles Eddie wasn’t even sure he still had. Buck settles on top of him, wrapping himself around him, nothing left of the lean boy he’d been years ago. He engulfes Eddie completely, big arms holding him so close that Eddie is sure if he could, Buck would rip open his chest and let him carve out a space between his heart and his lungs to stay there.

Didn’t know you were gay shoots through Eddie’s head and the thought terrifies him. Where did that come from? He doesn’t have a problem with it, not in the slightest, he’s pretty sure about that. He clears his throat as if that would make the bitter taste go away. “Yeah, I, uh. I’m a priest, actually.” He glances over to Buck, who… beams? At him? “Oh, that’s cool, my Cap would love you! He’s catholic.” That makes Eddie laugh. It’s such a simple response, the way Buck didn’t start questioning his entire personality because of his job. “Catholic people don’t automatically like priests,” he says, “but I appreciate the sentiment.” “Wait, do I have to call you Father, then?” Buck asks in all seriousness. “No,” Eddie says and looks him in the eye. “The only one you should call Father is the Almighty.” Screenshot of black text on white ground. That night, Eddie sins. He does it knowingly, consciously; he thinks about Tommy and Vegas and glad you’re not like that, mijo and being nineteen and having his first kiss not with a girl. His soul is lost already, so why keep trying? He thinks about curls he wants to pull on and lips he wants to kiss, stolen touches turning into deliberate groping, fingers digging deep enough to leave marks.

There’s a glass of water on the desk between them, a single drop slowly falling down at the side of it, forming a puddle Eddie wishes was big enough for him to drown in. “You’re not broken,” the priest says. “How can you say that? You don’t know me.” “I know enough.” The priest lets the silence take over again, studies Eddie’s face, and Eddie tries hard to keep up his mask but feels it slipping. Turns out, it’s quite difficult to keep your soul’s pain hidden when a priest is staring at you. “Think of this as your penance. Sit with this guilt you are feeling and make up for it in prayer and worship until you are forgiven.” “My penance?” Eddie bites, now ripping his gaze from the water and staring him right in the eye. “It’s all forgiven with a few prayers? What about him? I hurt him, I threw him out when he needed a place to stay. What was that about charity and love thy neighbor?” The priest smiles at him, his voice gentle despite Eddie’s anger thrown in his face. “This man tempted you. We don’t need to show love to the devil. Bad company ruins good morals, first Corinthians.” And that, well. That doesn’t sit right with Eddie. Buck isn’t the devil. He has his demons, same as everyone, but he isn’t the personification of sin and evil. Screenshot of black text on white ground. He tries to text Buck. It doesn't go through. He must’ve blocked him and it sends Eddie into a spiral. The things he messes up make people turn away from him to the point where it’s too late to do anything about it. Shannon is dead. Chris is in a different state. And Buck has every right to never talk to him again. He takes a day off from work, lets other people take care of his duties. He feels bad about it. The last time he missed Mass was when he’d gone to confession, now it’s just because he doesn’t feel like getting out of bed. He eyes the bible on his night stand, wills himself to do what he did before Buck and at least open it. The book weighs a ton in his hand, filled with— not advice, he realizes, but shame. Sin. Crammed full with so many pages that tell him how wrong he is. He opens one at random.
