"In its first six months in office, the UK Government has prioritised skills as a key policy area... Alongside an emerging industrial strategy, lifelong learning is going to be especially important for the creative industries, ensuring the sector has the skills it needs to thrive."

New report on creative industries recommends scaling up & supporting innovation, improve general business environment, maintain inward investment. Identifying regional clusters of creative industries could highlight & promote these talent pools to foreign investors.

The UK’s booming creative industries could employ even more people – if they attract fresh international investment
Supporting innovation and identifying regional clusters of creative industries are two recommendations from our recent report.

Interesting Creative PEC report dropped this week on FDI in the #CreativeIndustries. Big takeaway Q for me around the high levels of FDI from mergers and acquisitions and the implications on keeping UK IP in the UK 🤔
bernardhay.bsky.social
Pulblished today! We’re launching the Creative PEC’s latest #StateOfTheNations report looking at Foreign Direct Investment in the Creative Industries. There’s a wealth of data in there looking at FDI across creative sub-sections, nations and regions. A few of the key findings:

UKRI is recruiting a Director to lead work on R&D and Place.

A great opportunity for an action-oriented leader who wants to tackle the many well-documented issues of the geography of R&D in the UK!

A key takeaway for me is that the regional variation in FDI highlights an important role for local and devolved government in mapping and promoting distinctive regional strengths to overseas investors. This is a key opportunity for forthcoming Local Growth Plans and partnership working with UK govt.
bernardhay.bsky.social
The UK is one of the principal nations undertaking outward creative FDI. Whilst the leading destination for UK FDI is the USA, Asian countries are also found to be important destinations.
bernardhay.bsky.social
Further assessing the benefits (e.g. access to new processes, technologies and skills) and potential costs (e.g. loss of UK-generated IP to overseas firms) should be a priority for policymakers.
bernardhay.bsky.social
The creative industries is unlike the rest of the economy in that the majority of FDI projects are M&As, which accounted for 64% of all creative FDI projects in the last three years.
bernardhay.bsky.social
Regions and nations including the West Midlands, North East of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland attract a high share of FDI projects relative to the size of their local creative economies.
