Silence reigned, marked only by slight sniffles and heavy breaths. Draco spoke up first.

'You should go, Hermione. It's the middle of the night.'

She shook her head. 'I don't want to let you go.'

'I don't want to as well.' He chuckled. 'Perhaps we should just stay here. Together?'

'Together.'

Words were exchanged but Hermione couldn't tear away from his eyes, his odour, and the way his voice shook even the deepest parts of her soul. A few minutes later, the two Professors left them alone. She briefly caught eyes with Professor Snape. Behind them was pain and… empathy. The door closed.

After what seemed like an eternity, she let go. His shirt was wet with her tears. She moved away, her spirit floating in an ocean of tempestuous intimacy. Her hand, however, was still holding his. She didn't even realise it. It was so natural, the way her fingers slid in the gaps of his hand.

Everything within her burst. He loved her. Never had that word been so sweet, never had it been so cherished. She threw her arms around him and sobbed on his chest. She didn't want to let go, not after that. Peppermint was flooding her senses. She didn't care. She'd rather drown than be without him.

Love. It was a word both of them avoided for months. They both knew, in some deep part of themselves, that their friendship had blossomed into something more. Even after their lips met, they still didn't want to say it.

Her heart stopped. 'You love me?'

He smiled. 'I love you, Hermione Granger.'

'If I don't do this, he'll win. If he wins, you'll die. If you die, I will never forgive myself. Who will challenge me when I'm wrong? Who will comfort me? Whose laughter will I hear in my darkest hours? Whose odour will I smell in my Amortentia?' He leaned in. 'Who else will I love but you?'

He took another step, wiping her tears as he seemed to take her face for the last time.

'Ever since I befriended you in our Fourth Year, I've come to realise something important. You. My heart beats with yours just as my mind runs with yours. I'll do anything for you, Hermione.

Her heart was beating like the drumbeats of war. Without even realising, she sprinted to Draco. She took his face in her hand. 'What are you doing Draco, spying for Voldemort? H-He'll kill you! No, no, there must be another way, there has to be—'

'There isn't, Hermione. Trust me, I've looked.'

He looked to Hermione before letting her go. He walked past her, his eyes fully locked to Professor Dumbledore's. Every word she had learnt died on her lips. She could only watch.

'It's agreed then. I'll spy on the Dark Lord for you.'

The breath was sucked out of Hermione's lungs.

He sighed, his eyes flicking to the two figures behind her. 'I need a guarantee.'

Hermione narrowed, her eyes moving from Draco to Professor Dumbledore and back again.

'Of course, my boy.' Professor Dumbledore stepped forward. 'Professor Snape will protect your mother. He'll do an Unbreakable.'

She turned away from them, her eyes only to Draco's. She didn't care about anything else but him. She brushed away the loose locks in front of his face and wiped his tears. 'You almost died, Draco.'

He put his hands on her face, smiling all the while. 'You almost died too. I can't let that happen.'

Whatever words on her tongue died when the door opened again. There, standing at the entrance, was Professor Dumbledore and Professor Snape. Their eyes bulged as they found Hermione.

She strode up to them, breath harried. 'Professor, I can explain—'

A hand stopped her. 'It's okay, Granger.'
December 3, 2024 at 5:02 AM
She pushed through the door, focusing just on the boy standing a few feet away. He turned, his eyes wet but surprised.

'Granger—'

She ran and then SLAPPED him. He didn't even flinch.

'There has to be another way. I can't lose you!'

He hung his head. He breathed out. 'This is the only way.'

He turned to her, his eyes opened. All of that hatred was gone, replaced by… respect? No. Not respect. Love. There was nothing but love in them.

'Come. Let's see what we Malfoys are really like, dear fiancée.'

She placed her hand in his, the palm still soft after the War.

'Lead the way… fiancé.'

'That was the Manor recording your magic.'

She turned to Draco, his eyes closed and his lips smiling. After eight years in school with him, Hermione never realised that he had a dimple on his right cheek.

'Mine?'

He chuckled. 'You are to be the new Mrs Malfoy after all, Granger.'

She opened them, her eyes catching the metallic glint on her left hand. An engagement ring. The house seemed to hum, singing as a sort of choir to the heavenly host above. A strong warmth surged through her, carrying the stress away. For the first time since the war, she felt safe and sound.

'Yes, I will marry you.'

The cat's out of the bag. The words were *actually* said, words that had only been written down and never verbalised. In spite of the war, nothing changed. She needed him if she ever wanted to—

Something cold washed over her.

'Open your eyes, Hermione.'

Hermione closed her eyes, unwilling to even see a glimpse of his smug face. She gritted her teeth, unable to say the words. She simply nodded.

He laughed, the voice vibrating every inch of her. 'I need you to say it. Let your intentions be clear.'

Her throat bobbed before opening her mouth.

'What use do I have for a failed ideology that led to my father mumbling nonsense in Azkaban, my mother withering away in her room, and me being locked in this Merlin-forsaken Manor for another year?'

He leaned in to her, cedar and peppermint invading her senses.

'Again. Have you considered it?'
November 29, 2024 at 10:13 AM
'Have you… considered my offer?'

She shook off his arm and did whatever to not comment on how raspy and deep his voice was.

'You forget yourself, Malfoy, I'm not a pureblood.'

'What makes you think that matters?'

She glanced at him, focusing on his gleaming grey eyes. 'You really don't care?'

She walked over to a windowsill, watching Wiltshire in the spring. Flowers were bursting all over the fields, covering the land in vibrant colours. Leather croaked before footsteps echoed in the room. Warmth replaced the cold before an arm snaked around her shoulders. She shivered.
