The media have to keep pursuing the claims from Farage's days at Dulwich School in order to show him up for exactly who he is. It would also be good if Peter Ettedgui took out a slander case against Tice for saying he was lying about Farage on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme.

Someone (perhaps Starmer at PMQs) should remind Badenoch that the Tories got 23.7% of the vote at the last election. That was a disastrous result for them. But under her leadership since then the current polling for the Tory Party is around 16 to 18%. That says everything you need to know about her.

They’re too frightened to do the bold things that need to be done because their own MPs fear they will lose their seats at the next General Election - which most of them doing the worrying are going to regardless. So Reeve/Starmer might as well have done it anyway.

I watched the interview with Peter Ettedgui on BBC News. I have no doubt whatsoever that his claims against Farage are true; one doesn't forget incidents like that. What he said was also backed up by a number of fellow pupils. It seems that a number of teachers also had the measure of Farage.

My experience with my GP practice is exactly the same. There's a lot of good service going on within the very stretched GP (and hospital) system.

He’s in that category that no longer seems to exist - a decent Tory.

Fair points, Farrukh. But NHS nurses will get ILR after 5 years. It’s unclear what other public sector workers might get. Is someone earning £125k of more value to the UK than NHS workers? No way.

“Safe routes” is not as easy as it sounds. Setting up processing centres (in France or elsewhere) will encourage many more throughout Europe to apply for asylum in the UK and will potentially increase (not reduce) the numbers. And those who are refused will still attempt the boat crossing.

I’ve been hoping some journalist would pursue this for ages. Why hasn’t anyone done it?

It looks like Mahmood is proposing something similar through sponsorship by community groups with permanent settlement after 10 years. More details yet to come.

I'd like to hear what a politician like @carladenyer.bsky.social
might suggest as a solution rather than just sounding off in generalities.
November 17, 2025 at 3:56 PM
I don't know the answer. That's why I posed my original question - ie lots of people talk about having a safe route for asylum seekers but no-one seems to have a solution to how such a system would work.
November 17, 2025 at 3:53 PM
The UK/France scheme, whilst helpful, is limited in scope. I think what most people mean by a safe route system is something more like the scheme which was put in place for the Ukrainians - ie a system where asylum seekers can apply from overseas.
November 17, 2025 at 3:36 PM
There's a lot of talk about safe routes but little detail of exactly how these would work. Do any other European countries have a safe route system that works?

She becomes even more of an embarrassment every time she opens her mouth. If she’s so keen on Trump she should clear off over there. She’s no longer welcome in the UK as far as I’m concerned.

Completely agree. I'm a great fan of the BBC. It's not perfect but it is still probably the best broadcaster in the world.

I support a 2p increase in income tax. It wouldn't hit pensioners or the low paid too hard. It would be an extra £20 a month for someone earning £25K a year. Someone earning £35K a year would have to pay about £37 extra a month. And someone earning £50K a year would an extra £62 a month.
