The well-intentioned things people have said to me, a 30s woman, include:
- "Oh I had it on my thigh we call it my shark bite!"
- "My nose doesn't line up with my face anymore but women think it makes me look British" (A MAN)
- "I met an 80-year-old with a giant scar on her face it was so badass!"

I'm so glad she's ok AND I don't want to be a cautionary tale scaring children, but thank you!

I will say, due to the location and depth of the tumor on my face, the surgeries I ended up getting were oddly disfiguring. I will be physically fine, but the mental toll of this is draining. If anyone has been through this on the tip and length of their nose, please reply to me here. Thank you!

Get your skin checked, even if you never tan, even if you are almost pathologically OBSESSIVE about sunscreen. Get a biopsy if you suspect something is off. I am so lucky I have health insurance through my union, and know if I didn't, I would still have a tumor growing under my skin.

Basal Cell Carcinoma is a very common and EXTREMELY curable skin cancer. One in five Americans will be diagnosed with it in their lifetimes, most of them sweet old men named Saul, who were all in the waiting room with me. The treatment is MOHS removal, if you catch it. I am so, so glad I caught it.
