I'm sorry that this happened to him, but glad he got the diagnosis and is getting treatment. It's estimated that most people who have this never get a proper diagnosis and end up being misdiagnosed with some other form of dementia. With treatment recovery is possible.

I have a family member with NPH, often the cause is unknown. Biggest risk factor is just age, but it can run in families, and is sometimes secondary to a head injury, stroke, tumor, or meningitis.
