On January 25, 2025, the United States Senate confirmed Pete Hegseth as the 29th Secretary of Defense in a 51-50 vote. After meeting one-on-one with Secretary Hegseth and reviewing his confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee, I supported his nomination. While I take the Senate's advise-and-consent responsibility seriously, I generally believe that Presidents of either party should be able to pick key members of their team. Secretary Hegseth brings valuable experience to this role, having served as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army National Guard with deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. His combat experience is important because it provides him with firsthand insight into the challenges and opportunities facing our service members and the strategic demands of national defense. At the Pentagon, Secretary Hegseth has prioritized restoring the warrior ethos, rebuilding our military, and reestablishing deterrence. I share these goals and intend to do my part as a U.S. Senator to further them. Our military faces its most precarious moment since the Cold War. The United States and our unmatched network of allies and partners are confronting a new axis of authoritarian aggressors. It is critical to shift our focus away from previously proposed inflation-adjusting budget cuts, DEI initiatives, and climate change programs, and instead prioritize lethality and deterrence in the next generation of warfare. Our adversaries have a clear plan to reshape the U.S.-led international order and are rapidly advancing critical military technologies. Our response must be equally focused and resolute. A formal year-round diplomatic presence is an effective way for the U.S. to better understand local political and economic dynamics. Furthermore, given Greenland's geographic proximity and its rising potential as a commercial and tourist location, the next Administration should pursue policies that enhance economic ties between the U.S. and Greenland. • Established an office in Greenland to help counter China's claims of being "a near Arctic state" and reoriented its programming across Asia-including establishing a USAID Mission to Central Asia-in line with America's Indo-Pacific strategy.
