Love trees? Hate the idea of genetically modified trees being quietly planted in the environment without environmental assessment or monitoring?! Support our legal challenge to #StopHidddenGMOs. DONATE today to help us fund our challenge www.crowdjustice.com/case/stop-hi...

There's no 'buffer zones' in the ocean. New regulations for genetically modified precision bred organisms allow environmental releases of experimental crops on land and in our oceans and waterways with no transparency. DONATE to our legal challenge today. www.crowdjustice.com/case/stop-hi...

Epic media fail. Every major UK media outlet covering GMO deregulation just repeated government talking points that precision bred GMOs are 'natural' & aren't GM at all. Zero critical journalism on blatant corporate spin. DONATE today to #StopHiddenGMOs crowdjustice.com/case/stop-hidden-gmos

In opposition, Labour was deeply critical of the lack of transparency around #GMO precision-bred organisms. In power, they have ushered in one of the least transparent & most liberal regimes in the world. #StopHiddenGMOs. DONATE to our legal fund now crowdjustice.com/case/stop-hidden-gmos

The UK government doesn't want you to know if you are eating or growing GMOs. But 8 in 10 in the UK think this is wrong & want to see all GMOs labelled. We're challenging the government to #StopHiddenGMOs. Support our legal action crowdfunder today crowdjustice.com/case/stop-hidden-gmos

Two futures. One grounded in real soil, real food & trust. The other in secrecy, synthetic food & deregulation. What kind of food system do you want? We’re taking the fight for #GMO transparency to court. Support our legal challenge to #StopHiddenGMOs at www.crowdjustice.com/case/stop-hi...

What's the government trying to hide by not labelling precision bred GMOs? We've started a legal action to ensure openness & traceability when it comes to GMOs in our food & environment. If you think transparency's a good idea, join the fight. DONATE today www.crowdjustice.com/case/stop-hi...

Consumers, farmers & food businesses want all GMOs to be subject to rigorous environmental & safety assessments, meaningful public consultation & full traceability ‘from field to fork'. Help us fight back. #StopHiddenGMOs DONATE to our legal fund now www.crowdjustice.com/case/stop-hi...

11/ Real solutions must address policy failures, market power, supply chains & the fundamental structure that traps farmers on a treadmill. Until then, @SteveReedMP "higher yields = higher profits" is agriculture's most persistent lie. #GetReal #PrecisionBreeding #FarmEconomics
beyond-gm.bsky.social
10/ This isn't anti-innovation, it’s economics. Policymakers promoting 'yield = profit' narratives don't understand farm economics...and they certainly don’t understand the decades of failure behind agricultural genetic engineering. Farmers deserve better than false promises.
beyond-gm.bsky.social
9/ A cruel irony: global food output p/p has increased 43% since 1961. We produce more than we need &, by some metrics, feed the world better than ever. But up to 75% of farm jobs in rich countries are gone. Success by every metric except what helps support farmers: profit.
beyond-gm.bsky.social
8/ So what about "precision breeding"? For years it’s promised but delivered…nothing to address yield, climate change, biodiversity, drought/flooding. Without addressing market structure, should it deliver, it'll just accelerate the treadmill. Different tech, same economic trap.
beyond-gm.bsky.social
7/ But surely the early tech adopters win? Temporarily, maybe. But here's the catch: you have to keep being first to every new technology forever. Miss one cycle and you're done. It's like an exhausting high-stakes game of musical chairs that never ends.

6/ Why does this happen? Food demand is ‘inelastic’ – people don't buy and eat twice as much just because there's twice as much food being produced. So e.g. when supply jumps 10%, prices might fall 20%. Basic economics working against farmers.

5/ In the US in 2024 abundant production came up against a shift in demand & corn prices fell from $6.30 to $4.10/bushel). In 2018-19 when China imposed tariffs on US soybeans, high yielding farmers lost billions. Neither the farmer nor the crop is responsible for these messes.

4/ A recent @FFC_Commission report shows UK farmers' incomes stagnant since the 1970s, despite higher productivity and reduced workforce. Falling produce prices, increased reliance on imports & supermarket dominance have all eroded profitability. ffcc.co.uk/publications...

Cheap food, big business and the cost to farming and food security.

3/ The productivity gains in some sectors are mind-blowing. In the 1920s average wheat yield in the UK was around 1-1.5 tonnes per hectare. In the 2020s it’s 8 tonnes. Yet profitability has not reliably kept pace with this increase.
beyond-gm.bsky.social
2/ Meet the "agricultural treadmill" – a concept that's been crushing farm profits since the 1950s. It goes something like this: New tech → Early adopters get higher yields → More farmers adopt tech → Oversupply → Prices crash → Everyone back to square one (but poorer).

1/ UK DefraSecretary of State @SteveReedMP told @CommonsEFRA this week that precision breeding will boost farm profits by increasing yields. But here's a problem: higher yields don't always mean higher profits. Let’s look at how this assumption clashes with economic reality... 🧵
