A bittersweet farewell to our 2000-series! 🚇

Today, we removed the final one from Greenbelt Rail Yard. These trains were first introduced in the early 1980s, operated nearly 200M miles, and carried more than 775M passengers.

Now, we’re making way for our 8000-series! 👋

I was reading a study not too long ago that tracked civilizations through history and found that on average they get about 300 years of healthy evolution & growth before their own status quos start weighing them down and things start falling apart under their own weight.

I suspect some parents do not mind having mental down time in their day where they can switch off their parenting brains and exhale.

I wonder if it tracks across parents of all age kids, or is different for elementary kids vs teens.

One of the all time branding screw ups is that Townsville City, Australia--a real place, perfectly named--calls its bus and ferry systems "Kinetic" and "SeaLink" rather than "Bus" and "Boat."

Baltimore's bigger Howard Street freight tunnel opened today, doubling capacity through that corridor. A big win for sustainable freight!

And also it's kind of a shame that on the exact same route, LRT trains for humans don't get a subway, and sit at red lights on the street directly above.

Looking at this narrow tram stop, I ask myself the forever question of design:

"Is it ok to settle for something that improves over the previous conditions (on-street boarding) but does not meet the full standard for proper accessibility?"
