also fun fact- the bridge is repainted so often because of the salty air

as a bonus, this article contains some pictures of the mt olympus set going by some semaphores in southern Oregon.

Tribute to Siskiyou Semaphores
Southern Pacific installed Union Switch & Signal semaphores on the Siskiyou Line in Oregon around 1912, and the last working set was removed in 2007.

the talgos are only on the runs up to Vancouver BC right now. my desk at work faces the UP main here in salem. haven't seen a talgo go by since August.
November 20, 2025 at 9:27 PM
mt bachelor and Jefferson both seat 270. most of the talgo 6s sat 269. the mt hood set sat 280 and adams sat 244.
November 20, 2025 at 9:26 PM
there is some unwritten beef between talgo and wsdot that likely influenced that decision

more info you folks might not have on the airos - the cascades sets will have 299 revenue seats, with 21 non revenue seats in the cafe.

the breakdown:
3 coaches, 72 seats
business class, 49 seats,
cab car, 34 seats

amfleets are running 144 in coach+15 business right now. will be a big upgrade

even on the Cascade route too- trains often sell out, and the ride quality sucks. the airos will practically double train capacity compared to what's running today.

probably the one bad thing that doesn't suck when it happens

I hear some steps, but not sounds. I think it has to do with the thickness of the floor plate and the type of sound. Concrete vibrates and carries impact related sounds, but reflects sounds.... Just my experience though, yours is different.

i think it really depends on how the buildings are built and maintained, not so much the material type. Soviet blocks used precast panels, iirc. I very much like my current place

Not sure if I agree with allowing no sprinklers in concrete structures. Plenty of things in units are combustible, such as the flooring, fixtures, furniture, and more.

i live in a stout concrete building and the only time i hear my neighbors is when they drop large objects on the ground
November 19, 2025 at 4:05 AM
i agree. that's not what the discussion is about though. when transit service is inadequate, builders have to spend more money for parking so their buildings are just as popular if they were somewhere with good transit.

it's not up to us to tell them what that number is.
November 16, 2025 at 8:12 PM
what's the incentive for building a building with no parking in an area with no transit? why would a developer do that? it should be up to them. if they think it's feasible, so be it. maybe rent will be cheaper

Thanks for sharing - did you know the OE had purchased ROW for a bridge across the Willamette in Corvallis? there were plans to run trains down 4th street eventually... ROW was eventually sold back to the city when service was started to be cut.

Does your car not have a speedometer? Pretty easy to not speed if you got one
